Razorbacks vs Reapers: Week 5 Reschedule

Written by: Matt Jackson

This weekend saw the much awaited rescheduled Week 5 matchup between the Razorbacks and Reapers. The Razorbacks still seeking that elusive win despite seeing improvement week after week from an ever developing squad. The Reapers, on the other hand, seemingly coming into form after a slow start to the season came into the game on a 4 game winning streak, aware that a win on the day would pull them to the top of the table ahead of some strong competition.

The coin toss resulted in some confusion for Reapers team Captain Simon King with the Razorbacks deferring. The Reapers would eventually have the correct unit on the field and start on offence. This confusion, however, would not last. After a failed deep pass down field was missed, the Reapers would go straight to their work horse Craig Batiste in the running game. A pitch would see Craig stream up the sideline for the touchdown (“TD”), running the full 45 yards of the field! Johan Pols would receive the 1 point after TD (“PAT”) in the front of the end zone on an out route. 0-7 Reapers.

The Razorbacks offence would struggle early, gaining 7 yards with 2 completions to their Centre Josh Smale before turning over on downs. The Reapers defence who have been solid all season made their mark from the outset.

The Reapers second drive would be a mirror image of their first with a missed passed on 1st down followed by a pitch to Craig which would see him again hitting the sideline and running the full length of the field for a TD. Craig’s speed to the sideline can only be appreciated either by watching the highlights on our YouTube page (game video at the bottom of the page) or Usain Bolt in the 100 Metres! The PAT attempted failed resulting in a score of 0-13.

Razorbacks would find success early on in the drive with Dan Guilbert hitting Chris Ferbrache on 1st down on a 5 yard slant. He would again find Chris Ferbrache down the sideline on 3rd down for 10 yards resulting in a 4th and short. Reapers defence would again stand strong with a rush from Jamie Jenner forcing a quick misplaced pass from Dan. Turnover on downs.

With the Reapers running game proving difficult to defend, they would again hand the ball off to Craig on 2nd down who only managed to run the ball 30 yards this time. Giving Craig a break, Saad Frihmat would carry the ball to the Razorbacks 3 yard line where Si would seal the deal on a short out route to Johan. The 1 PAT was missed leaving the score 0-19.

Following a quick 4 and out the Reapers would take over on offence. A pass on a double cut route to Matthew Jackson gained a quick 27 yards and a first down for the Reapers. A direct handoff to Matt followed by a short out route for a TD would finish the drive. Reapers would go for the 2 PAT with a successful pitch to Craig. This would be the final score of the half. The score at 0-27.

With no success on the Razorbacks opening drive of the half, the Reapers would again string together a nice drive down the field. However due to a miss communication between receivers and some great play from Chris Ferbrache, the Razorbacks came away with the interception and a much needed turnover.

Determined not to be out done and disappointed with his previous thrown interception, Si would find himself perfectly placed to pick off a bobbled pass and return it for a TD. The 2 PAT would be successful as despite being doubled covered, Si would find Johan in the end zone with a jump ball. The score is 0-35.

The Razorbacks would make a change at quarterback bringing in 2nd stringer Sam Loveridge. With what can only be described as some sort of cuddle from Reapers corner back Robert Domaille, the Reapers incurred a spot foul and gave the Razorbacks the automatic 1st down. With decent field position the Razorbacks strung together a nice drive using James Williams in both the running and passing game for big gains. Sam finding his centre Josh wide open for 10 yards on 3rd down would set them up for a 4th and short. Sam would then find James at the front of the end zone for a 10 yard TD. Blake Batiste pulled in the 2 PAT to bring the score to 8-35.

This would be the only successful drive from the Razorbacks however would not be the end of the day for their defence. The Reapers would add a further 2 TDs to the score board with the first on a jump ball to Johan in the back of the end zone and the second to Chris Grantham on a short pass. Matt would finish the day catching the 2 PAT in the back of the end zone to finish the game 8-49.

The Reapers with the win now sit clear at the top of the table with 6 wins however cannot take their foot of the gas with the Hornets and Terrapins nipping at their heels!
