Week 8: Reapers vs Terrapins

Written by: Jamie Jenner

In my long career of playing Flag Football (8 months), I have not seen a match so clearly separated by 2 halves – the first half dominated by the Terrapins and the second half held firmly in the grasp of the Reapers. Nonetheless, both teams played excellently and therefore proving this was a key match for them both.

The Reapers won the coin toss and their first series was fairly uneventful. It started with a short pass to Matthew Jackson (Matt) which brought the ball up a quarter of the pitch and then continued with another pass to Johan Pols which moved the ball 5 yards. Next there was a pitch play to Jamie Jenner who was tackled 2 yards up the line (Note that he did have an injured knee so it’s not his fault he played awfully this game). Then the series was finished by a missed pass to Matt.

The Terrapins started on a completely different level and picked the theme for the first half. It began with a short pass to Gary Maclachlan Which brought the ball up 5 yards. The next play is clear evidence that Nick Gaudion (the QB) had been practicing, as he did a long throw to Callum Hockey in the end zone which placed the first touchdown on the scoreboard. This touchdown was followed by a conversion by Luca Finetti. The score was 7 – 0.

The Reapers sought to follow the Terrapins onto the scoreboard and they did in this series. It was not a short series as the Terrapins’ was but a battle of attrition. It began with a handoff to Matt which was stopped 5 yards up the line. This was closely followed by an attempted long throw to Johan and then another throw to Matt which was defended by Luca. On fourth down, Si pulled out the stops and did a long throw to Johan, which bounced out of his hands but was caught again before it hit the floor.

Now three quarters of the way up the pitch, Si followed the long throw to Johan with a short pass which got the ball within 10 yards from the End Zone. Next, Si did a short pass to Nick Schofield who had gotten away from his defending corner and was able to catch it. This was the first touchdown for the Reapers. The conversion was not made as Luca was able to knock the ball away from Matt. The score is 7 – 6 to the Terrapins.

The Terrapins continued with their aim of having the shortest series in the league and only had one play. This was a handoff to Callum who was able to evade 3 Reapers and sprint the length of the pitch, scoring a touchdown. Unfortunately, the conversion was dropped, but that didn’t matter as there was a penalty for the Terrapins as Iaan Erasmus was found guilty of holding the Blitzer. As this was a conversion, this didn’t have any effect on the next series.

The Reapers instigated their series with a handoff to Jamie, but due to his injured state he fumbled the ball. This was followed by a short pass to Matt which was missed and bad went to worse when Nick, the Terrapins’ QB, intercepted a long pass and was stopped inches from scoring a touchdown.

The Terrapins decided on a new plan of attack and played the long game with this set. It began with a pitch to Callum, which was stopped a yard back by Jamie (making up for his earlier fumble). This was followed by a short pass to Gary and then a high pass to Gary (which missed him). On the fourth down, Luca was able to catch a long throw from Nick and got to 10 yards from the End Zone before being tackled.

This battle of attrition continued with a short pass to Callum again, which was tackled by Johan. To make 100% sure that he got the tackle, Johan pulled Callum’s belt off. Finally, the series was ended by a sliding touchdown from Luca who was the recipient of a short pass from Nick. There was no conversion due to the good defending from Chunky (Robert Domaille).

The Reapers started with high ambitions but a long throw from Si missed the waiting hands of Johan. After this miss, Si decided to continue with the battle of attrition and did a short pass to Johan who was able to evade Terrapin defenders until just short of the halfway line. The next pass was a throw to Matt who unfortunately fumbled the ball. On 4th down, there was a final short pass to Johan that was inches from being dropped but he was able to hold onto the ball and bring the Reapers past the halfway line.

The next play was a casual shovel pass to Chris Grantham (the centre) who brought the ball within 10 yards for the end zone. Soon after there was a handoff to Matt, but superb defending by Luca only pushed the ball forward 2 yards. To round the first half off, Si did a short pass to Matt but missed.

Halftime was called and the score was 19 – 6. The first half was owned by the Terrapins but a halftime rousing speech by Si ensured that the next half was going to be the Reapers’.

The Terrapins started the half with a short pass to Ben Saul which brought the ball up 5 yards. This was followed by a long throw to Gary but the catch was missed. Next there was a centre pass to Iaan but was dropped and then to stop the series, an interception from Johan (the first of 3).

Clearly Si’s halftime speech / bollocking roused Matt into action as the first play in this series was a handoff that ended 5 yards past the halfway line. To continue the success of the handoffs, a second handoff to Johan occurred which ended about 9 yards from the Terrapins’ end zone. Next there was a short pass to Johan which was stopped inches from scoring. As this was working, Si did a short pass to Johan but he caught it out of bounds leaving the Reapers’ on 4th down to score. Not one for giving up, Si decided to do another short pass to Johan but this time Johan caught it, scoring a touchdown. The conversion, a 2 PAT, was scored by Matt which brought the score up to 19 – 14.

The Terrapins began their series with another short pass to Luca this time who was stopped 3 yards from the halfway line after weaving his way through the Reapers’ defence. Next, inches from being sacked, Nick threw a centre pass to Iaan which was stopped 7 yards from the end zone by a diving tackle by Matt Jackson. This success unfortunately did not last as Johan intercepted the pass again and was tackled by Nick just before the halfway line.

The Reapers’ clearly decided the short passes / handoffs were the way to go and started the series with a handoff to Nick Schofield who was stopped 8 yards from the halfway line. The next play was a dropped pass to Kersch which was then followed by a short pass to Chunky that was tackled 2 yards off the halfway line by Ben Saul. Not one to give up on a player, Si did another short pass to Chunky who was tackled 4 yards after the halfway line.

The next play did not start off as well, with a missed pass to Chris ‘the centre’ Grantham. Then there was a high pitch left to Matt, but was stopped 1 yard behind the line of scrimmage which was a loss. Then there was a short pass to Johan who got the ball up to within 10 yards of the end zone but the final play of the series was a pass to Matt who just dropped the ball.

The Terrapins started the play with a long throw up-field that was not caught, but an illegal rush from Si King (no-one knew why he did it) pushed the line of scrimmage 5 yards in the Terrapins’ favour. However, they were unable to use this to their advantage as a short pass to Callum was intercepted by Johan (again) but was tackled practically instantly by Callum (clearly as payback to Johan for pulling his belt off earlier).

The final series of the Reapers’ was destined to be a battle as there were 5 minutes to go and the Reapers’ needed one more touchdown to win the game. It started with a throw to Matt but was well defended by the Terrapins. Next there was a pitch to Johan that pushed the ball a quarter of the way up the pitch and was closely followed by a short pass to Matt, who was tackled inches from the halfway line by Luca. To secure that the Reapers had 4 more downs to score, Si decided to do a short pass to Johan that just pushed them over the halfway line.

The first play after the halfway line was a handoff to Chunky, but he was tackled by Josh Kinns straightaway so there were no yards made. Next was a long throw to Matt who just missed the catch. On the third down, there was a pass to Matt but he was tackled by Luca. On the final down with a minute left in the game, Si decided to get all his receivers to run 9s. In a stroke of luck / skill, Johan was free in the right of the end zone and was able to make the catch, bringing the score up to 20 – 19. He then ruined his success by dropping the next conversion.

The Terrapins had seconds to make up for that 1 point difference and they threw themselves at it. In a similar way to Si beforehand, Nick got all his receivers to run 9s and the ball was caught by Luca just out of bounds. There was another long throw attempted but that was unfortunately missed. In the final play of the game, Nick was able to evade the incompetent blitzer (yours truly) and throw a long ball downfield. However, the catch was not made and the match finished on 20 – 19 to Reapers.

As mentioned beforehand this was an excellent match with some very good plays and touchdowns. This was as close as close could be and I’m sure that the Terrapins will make up for this loss in their next match against the Reapers. Well played everyone!
