Reapers Vs Hornets: Week 3

A wet and drizzly Sunday morning saw Reapers take on Hornets in this Week 3 matchup.

Hornets started the game on offence and moved the ball well on 1st and 3rd down but failed to cross the 1st down line due to a fumble on the snap so with Hornets going 4 and out Reapers looked to take advantage and draw first blood. Like the Hornets, however, they failed to convert on 4th and short leading to another turnover on downs.

Hornets’ next drive had the same result as their first a 4 and out, with tight defence being played by Reapers which included a sack from Jamie Jenner. Reapers then produced the first score of the game they moved the ball down to the Hornets 5-yard line and eventually Si King found his primary target in Johan Pols for the touchdown. However they failed to convert the point after.

The Reapers lead didn’t last long though with hornets only needing 2 plays for Jordan Gallienne to find Sam Barrell (Baz) on a fly route to tie the game up, Hornets then completed their 1-point conversion but it was ruled out due to the 7 second rule for quarterbacks to release the ball was broken. Reapers had 1 more drive before the close of the half they gained yards through short passes and some strong run plays from Saad Frihmat, Jamie and Johan but failed to find the end zone bringing an end to the half with the scores tied at 6-6.

The Si to Johan combination could be a threat for Reapers this season with Si finding Johan in the end zone again for another touchdown and again for the point after to give reapers a 13-6 lead to open the second half.

Hornets also started off the second half with a scoring drive Jordy found James Alderton (Aldy) on a post route, which then set up a touchdown pass to Jack Romeril (Rom). Hornets then tied the game with a 1 point conversion through Baz. On the next drive the Reapers centre, Chris Grantham rolled out right and received a pass from Si which he took all the way to the end zone.

After appeals from Hornets that his foot was out of bounds, as well as being tackled short of the end zone, the officials had a quick discussion and decided to mark him short of the end zone. Reapers still found the endzone, with Johan finding space at the front of the end zone to receive the touchdown pass from Si, once again the point after was missed leaving reapers 19-13 up.

Hornets again responded right away with Jordy finding Aldy, on a another successful fly route, who went in for the tying score. Hornets were in prime position to take the lead, which they did with Jordy finding Luke Pattimore (Patti) in the end zone but it was ruled out for an offside. Scores stayed tied at 19-19.

With the seconds ticking away you wouldn’t know who to put your money on. Reapers got into scoring range but failed to convert and went 4 and out, that gave the advantage to Hornets but with their backup QB, Patti, now passing, they also went 4 and out.

With Reapers having all 3 timeouts left and just over 2 minutes, they looked certain to take it. Reapers used their timeouts smartly and moved the ball well down the field and looked certain to take the game but Hornets dug in and after and incomplete pass the clock ran out, with the game being tied at 19-19 overtime was required.

Reapers won the toss and chose offence using their speed from the running backs and good short sharp passing they got past the first down marker but after a fumble, incomplete pass and a penalty, which pushed them back past the half way line it was all or nothing on 4th down. Si threw the ball deep for it to come short of the end zone and be intercepted by Stuart Keltie, who attempted to run it back but was eventually tackled.

With Hornets only needing to score to end the game the tension was high, both teams had matched each other every drive so could this one be different? Only 1 play was required, Patti threw the ball deep to Aldy who beat Johan in the air and ran it into the end zone for a walk off touchdown final score Reapers 19-25 Hornets.

It was a close fought contest throughout, which both teams matching each other move for move. Reapers playing Si in his first start at QB found the offensive rhythm which had evaded them previously and the Hornets showed an improved defence and, once again, showed they are ready to go toe-to-toe for a whole game.
